Founded in 1922, CYC has a renowned history of yachting in the Southern California community. CYC was very involved in the organization of the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles. During those Olympics, CYC member Owen Churchill won the Gold Medal in the Eight-Meter Class. When the Olympics returned to LA in 1984, CYC was involved in running one of the sailing events that year. Many of its club members have won numerous national and international sailing events. Three of its members have won Olympic medals.
In 1963, the Club moved to its new quarters in Marina del Rey and in 1966 moved to a new clubhouse at the head of Marina del Rey’s main channel. The new facility included paddle tennis courts, heated swimming pool, 2-2ton hoists, a junior sailing and rowing center, and maintains an anchorage of 290 slips. The beautiful clubhouse overlooking the marina offers a member dining room, bar and private meeting rooms. Because of its club activities and facility, California Yacht Club has been recognized several times earning Platinum Club status by Club Leaders Forum. This designation places CYC as one of the top 20 yacht clubs in the country.
California Yacht Club is recognized as one of the premiere clubs in the U.S. for its exceptional race management, and as such, CYC has been awarded the host club for the 2020 J70 World Championships in July of that year.
PMYC members can enjoy access to the club’s dining and banquet facilities, pool and paddle tennis courts, and attend designated CYC events.
